The water at Dhanushkodi is crystal clear, but the small waves are very forceful, and feel like you are being punched in the chest.
There used to be a town located here along with a railway station, but the entire population was wiped out in 1964 from a cyclone and subsequent giant waves which washed the entire town away. It remains a ghost town till this day, with the brick skeletons of a few buildings lying in ruins. The train track was never restored. Everyone in the town died, around 2,000 people.
Dhanushkodi is also the birth place of a very famous siddhar named Kodiswami, who entered samadhi around 1993. Among sadhus, Kodiswami is spoken of with the highest regards and considered legendary. His samadhi is located at Puravipalayam near to Polachi.
